Olympic Memories

It was a new record—2 billion viewers. The most-watched Winter Olympics opening ceremony took place 20 years ago right here at the U’s Rice-Eccles Stadium. The U also hosted the closing events and was home to the Olympic Village where some 2,400 athletes from 77 countries lived for much of the month of February 2002. Students now reside in some of those same rooms at Heritage Commons.

As the world turned its gaze to Utah, the U was center stage for much of the attention—and may be again soon. Utah has officially thrown its hat in the ring to host the 2030 Games.

  1. I was part of the 2002 winter Olympics. I helped with the massive effort to put welcome packets together, I also greeted everyone with a smile and welcomed the world. I am and U of U Alumni of 1991 In health education, and wellness. My husband, I have moved to Chico California for his health of a milder climate. We did not know there would be drought and wildfires. I would love to see the winter Olympics come back to Salt Lake City, which has more local transportation. Utah came alive and there was a very nice nightlife for all families to enjoy. I have relatives in the area. The Olympics was and is always exciting and doing your best. You have my vote. Please invite the world to come in again to the U.S.of A for fun, and laughter, let’s be united with kindness caring to share friendly smiles again. U of U class of ’91’
