Before women in the U.S. could even legally vote, Martha Hughes Cannon became the first woman elected as a state legislator, in 1896. This statue of Cannon is temporarily on display at the Utah State Capitol. It will soon be exhibited in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. Cannon graduated with a degree in chemistry from the University of Deseret, now known as the University of Utah, in 1878.
