Three restored 1891 Army cottages with red shingle siding at Fort Douglas.

Picture: Fort Douglas Cottages, Revived

When a September 2020 windstorm stripped sections of vinyl siding from three 1891 Army cottages at Fort Douglas, it exposed a surprise underneath: the buildings’ original cladding, damaged but intact. Rather than patch over it, the University of Utah committed to a full restoration. Referring to photographs from around 1900, the restoration team rebuilt decorative corbels and gable trim from salvaged materials and tucked in modern seismic and energy upgrades. The cottages’ careful revival earned a Rehabilitation and Restoration Award.
